Diversity in the Workforce

Our workforce is changing – and it’s a wonderful thing. According to and the Census Bureau, “due to projected growth among Asian, Hispanic and multiracial groups, traditionally underrepresented populations will hit majority status by 2044”. We are a country that reflects the traditions, cultures and talents of all its inhabitants and because of that, many corporations are beginning to take note that a more diverse workforce possesses a wider array of talent and understanding of the average consumer.

“Companies that exhibit gender and ethnic diversity are, respectively, 15% and 35% more likely to outperform those that don’t.” However, the possibility of challenges in the acquisition and retention of these candidates can prove to be difficult. Working with teams to establish a sense of inclusion can oftentimes be problematic because of unconscious prejudices that may exist. The key to combating this? Maintain an open dialogue with your team and have them put positive practices into action. Make sure they are aware of how certain predetermined judgements can affect others. Devise team building exercises (as simple as fun question and answer games) that encourage the benefits of getting to know one another and becoming aware of the differences that make us exceptional.
