Are You Retaining Top Talent?

Are You Retaining Top Talent?

Ready to build your own team of super stars?

Bright stars are usually pretty easy to spot. Some burn bright hot all the way until they fizzle out, like a shooting star. But, as we all know, there can be trouble in paradise when it comes to retaining top talent on your team. You want to find employees who are capable, consistent, effective, and able to sustain the fire of confidence and skill required in your industry. So, how do you keep these talented shining stars? It’s all in the little things.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE BEST (AND WORST) EMPLOYEES ON YOUR TEAM

Your weakest link matters. The single most important thing to remember when organizing a team is that you’re only as strong as your weakest member. This means that you have to ensure that even your weakest player knows his or her strengths, and those strengths are utilized on a regular basis. Do you have a numbers person? A computer whiz? A sales guru? Put him or her to work where he or she works best. Focus on talents, not shortcomings. Every member of your team can “shine” in his (or her) own way!

UNTIL THE COWS COME HOME

Loyalty is priceless! If your industry historically has a high turnover rate, such as in the hospitality or retail business, you want to retain good people who are committed to your team, because they enjoy their positions and desire to improve themselves. Why? Because people like job security, and employees who have something to work for work harder for you. If you are loyal to them, they will be loyal to you. Give it first to get it in return.

SHOW ME THE MONEY

It may not be all about the money, but let’s face it…money matters. Business psychology suggests, theoretically, that less money causes stress, and more money causes stress. Therefore, a balanced pay scale is a key component in maintaining your shining stars. Keeping top talent well paid, keeps them happy, loyal, and hungry for more.

BE A LEADER, NOT A BOSS

Are you willing to get dirty and jump in the trenches with your team? No? Then you’re a boss, not a leader. If you’re only willing to tell your employees how to do something rather than show them yourself, you are not as effective in your position. When you show, instead of tell, life with employees improves drastically. It’s the age old adage, “Lead by example.” Leaders don’t demand respect…they earn it!

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE (BECAUSE SOCIAL SECURITY ISN’T SO SECURE)

How do you get your top employees to continue to perform while investing their growth, time, and energy in your company? It’s simple…by investing in them. Reward their efforts and celebrate their successes. Support and encourage educational and training initiatives, and partake in yearly career and success planning. Shining stars want to be recognized and praised. Holiday bonus, team luncheons, and positive praise makes employees feel appreciated. And they will, in turn, appreciate you.

 AND THEY’RE…STUCK LIKE GLUE

Top talent isn’t easily maintained, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Commit to finding team players who can think independently when the time arises, yet have a commitment to your (and your company’s) vision for the future! Find the best of the best. Treat them like the best of the best. And keep the best of the best. That’s all there is to it.
